Final Project "Change"

General introduction

     “Change” is a magic word. Every time I think of it, I gain some sort of power from it. 

There are few sentences I like relating to change.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world—Gandhi”

“Because you’re young, you’re torn between a world of hate and a world of dreams. So much to lose, So much to gain. So much to fight for, so much to change.”

Explanation, thought process and analysis

     When I was stuck, professor Kellner helped me for the brainstorm. He asked me "what do you like best for pleasure? Then I thought about painting, music, reading and architecture. For the reason that we are supposed to create 3 images for the final project, I came up with an idea to use paintings or photoshop to interpret the meaning of “change” that I find in the song, book and architecture. "Change" is the most important key word for my project.

     For the song, I choose “heal the world” sung by Michael Jackson. The main idea of this song is that love can change the world. I really like the lyric "Heal the world, Make it a better place, For you and for me, And the entire human race." So I try to create an image for the lyric. Three cute cartoon characters which are yellow, white and black races sit on the earth smiling to us. If everyone gives love to people around them, the world will change from a dark, catastrophic and conflicting place into a colorful, humanistic and loving place. I use comparison skill in this image and I really enjoy the idea to add bandage to the earth indicating the main idea "healing the world".

     For the architecture, I choose the Butterfly Bridge. This architecture is so beautiful. The shape of this building is the metaphor of a butterfly. The diagram of the building shows my feeling about this bridge, elegant and simple. When I was creating this picture, the transformation of the butterfly always came to my mind. From a pupa to an adult which can spreads the wings and soars in the sky, the pain it overcomes is the cost of its beauty and flourish. It is so amazing to see the worm change into a butterfly. In my opinion, life is like this process. Some people confront the brutal facts and finally succeed. So-me people just get enmeshed in a web of their own spinning. This picture also use comparison skill to show the difference between normal bridge and the butterfly bridge. I truly like the colorful background.

     For the book, I choose “Good to Great” written by Jim Collins. I like the Hedgehog Concept he mentioned in his book. Three questions you ask about yourself can change you from good to great. In my opinion, these three questions supplement each others. If you are good at something and spend a lot of effort on it, you will definitely become passionate about it. The money also plays an important role as an engine. How to show the connection among these three ideas becomes the most important problem for me to solve. Then, I use three circles overlap to each other to emphasize the connection. I also add vivid images to interpret the meaning of each idea. I really enjoy the image when someone is at the top of the mountain. This is a magnificent moment after you spend all your effort climb the mountain and finally see the whole world clearly.

Final project “Make the change”

Blog 9: Response to Carver “Cathedral”

Carver takes a lot of efforts to create characters. Outwardly, Robot, the blind man, is the one who needs help, because he has physical defect. However, when I finish the reading, I realize that the host is the one who gets help in the end. He doesn't like his job, doesn't like to communicate with his wife. He got prejudice for things around him such as the blind man. He is numb for the things around him and is not passionate about new stuff. Even though Robot has physical limitation, he has free mind. He is always interested in learning new stuff. He tries his best to live a colorful life, even though he can not see even black and white. Comparing to Robot, the host has mental defect. However, by drawing the cathedral, the host stimulates his own imagination. Now, with the help of Robot , he can feel the beauty of the outer world. It's interesting that when you close one of your sense such as closing your eyes, you can feel more.

Response to Wallace “This is Water” 

     In the speech, Wallace tries to discuss the real meaning of the education. In my opinion, the meaning of education is also the meaning of life. I agree with the author that knowledge is not the fundamental thing for education. How and what to think is far more important. The capacity to think is a gift we already have. However, how and what to think are our choices. So many evil deeds happen because of our arrogant; because we don't exercise control over what we think. Like the author said, we are like prisoners who believe in our own blind certainty until we die. So many things in our life could make us annoying or numb. The author asks, are there any possibility that things can be not or less annoying? I think it is easy to complain about our life routines which last "day after week after mouth after year". It is hard to get rid of our default setting and choose to live positively and passionately. In a movie named Detachment, a saying goes that, it's so easy to be careless, but it took a lot lot more courage to keep care for somebody. 

     So what is the water for us? I guess water is choices about how we are gonna live our life, choice of how and what to think, choices about which behavior, attitude and virtue are meaningful and truly what we want.

Micro project 6

  

     In my opinion, nature is opposite to artificiality. Plants, river and sky, they have their own ways to work, their own rules to follow. Then, I begin to choose my object. I came up with an idea that my brain is the item I use the most. How about relating the nature to my brain? Then, I recorded my emotional change. I'm usually happy. When I do something wrong, (for example, I sometimes procrastinate and miss the deadline.) I become angry about myself. Then, I feel upset and disappointed about myself. After adjustment, I recover from those negative emotions and try my best to what I can do. I realize that the cycle of my emotional change is like the cycle of weather. First, the sky is sunny. Then, the lightning comes, followed by the heavy rain. Finally, the rainbow comes out. 

     The process to do this project is not hard. First, I use camera to record my face expressions in diverse moods. Then, I find the drawing that can represent the weather. Finally, I put them together and add the background to create the imaginary atmosphere, because the nature and my mood is amazing and magic for me.

Micro project 5

     I always want to fly. There is no doubt that the first super power came to my mind is the ability to fly. Life is full of fears and distractions. Flying gives us the moment without fears and distractions. It makes us feel totally free. When I fly in the sky with birds, it feels like I am an integral part of nature. I like the simple white background in my picture. The idea to put the angry birds around me is kind of a funny idea. I think it will attract people's attentions.

     When the brainstorming continue, I start to think that which super power is relating to painting? Then I come up with my mind that bringing back the dead celebrities to life could be really cool. When I read a book, I always image that the authors are my friends who share knowledge with me. What will happen if I bring them back to life and have some real conversations with them. Will they debate for theirs own opinions? Will they learn from each others to create much more brilliant ideas? I 'm looking forward to learn philosophy from Aristotle and learn science from Einstein. I have so many questions I don't understand about the world to ask them.Again, I enjoy the simplicity of my picture. With the white background, things that really matter stand out. It could become better if I create an image that the dead celebrities are sitting and having some conversations together.

Micro Project 4

I choose one of my architecture models to represent my identity. The bathhouse model shows my understanding of shape and space. Furthermore, when I build it, I should not only maximize my creativity but also consider it's availability as an architecture. For example, I need to consider people's experience, the application of each room and the lighting aperture. I spent a lot of time and effort on it. One interesting idea came to my mind that when you spend time with something or create something, this stuff becomes part of your life . 

Then I choose swimming poor as my spot, because it is the real place for people to take a shower, swim and play with water. The bathhouse is a place I imagine for people to interact with water. I wanna see the comparison between imagination and reality, small scale and large scale. 

I put my model on different places such as bench or side of the pool. I wanna see whether people will recognize the model. Will people think that the stuff I put a lot of effort on is cool? Will they come up with some ideas or be inspired by it? I realize that most of them just enjoy the water and ignore the model. It is interesting to think that the unremarkable thing is like a modest person. It doesn't need people to recognize it and praise it. It has it's own value. However, I realize some people in the pictures did realize my model and try to figure out what it is. This made me kind of happy. I also put the model together with slippers and towel, because they show the identity of swimmer. There is a comparison between my identity and theirs

Blog 7 Blurring of art and life

It is an interesting question whether we should let art melt into daily activities. Another way of saying it is whether we should regard our normal behavior as art. An old saying goes that art originates from life above life. We always endow what we've been through with the human context and art context to create resonance and aesthetic feeling. However, according to the article, "art shifted away from the specialized object in the gallery to the real urban environment to the real body and mind to communications technology and to remote natural regions of the ocean sky, and desert."--which means that art has become secularized. The ironic part is that people try to deny the sacredness of art and the basic parts of art such as creativity and skill. The interesting part is that the author tried to become sensitive about his daily event. He sensed the tension of his body and felt the movement of his hand. He also relates the normal behavior to the change of time and space.

I don't really like what Duchamp do. If you wanna break the old frame, you need to create more powerful idea to convince us. Making fun of art just doesn't make sense.

Micro Project 3

Passport and I20 form

These two things show my identity as a overseas student. They also allow me to travel and study in US. The word "overseas" reminds me that I need to adapt to different culture and overcome problems by myself. The word "student" keep telling me that study is the main reason why I'm here.

Kindle

Kindle shows my identity as a bookworm. When I am reading, I feel like the authors are having conversations with me as a friend. They told me their creative points of view or fascinating stories. I can improve a lot and grow up by reading.

Painting

the paintings I draw show one of my favorite hobbies. When I pick up a pen, I become dedicated instantly. The paintings show my ideas, creation and observation. It also reflects the world I see.

Computer

I can't live without computer. I use it to get information about living and learning. Meanwhile, I use softwares such as Photoshop AutoCAD and Word to do my job. Last but not least, I surf the internet, listen to music and watch movies on my computer to relax.

Wacom tablet

It is also used for drawing. However, it is different from paintings. Paintings represent my past which are what I have already done. Recently, I plan to learn computer graphing. The wacom tablet shows my plan for the future.

     About my final image. I put everything in the lens of my camera. It seems all those stuff that show my identity are captured by camera and are reflected on the lens. Then, they automatically follow the radial composition. I tend to make my background look like a classical sketch so that it can also shows my identity as someone who likes art. The text "Experience more" shows my philosophy of life. I really enjoy having diverse experience. Reading, listening to music and watching movies sometimes give me brand new experience. My another philosophy of life is to be creative. The clouds show that I always come up with some ideas when I draw or read. The clouds stand for what I create and what I think. However, my final image only shows the time I stay alone, which only indicates my personal identity. I also spend a lot of time chatting with friends and family which indicates my social identity.

Blog 6

Sullivan Feet in Smoke

     This article inspires me a lot about family relationship and about death. The author mentions that he communicates with his brother through music which is like an "emotional code". I can feel his sadness when he goes to the hospital seeing his brother laying on the bed like a dead man. Then, the miracle happens when his brother recovers from a patient with 1 percent brain activity and with no sign of anything to a man with consciousness. However, it is amusing for me that the author depicts a story changing from tragedy to comedy. I realize that human beings are really tender and are just a tiny small part of the universe. The inner world of a mental patient is kind of attractive to me. I think Worth is really creative for having diverse points of view about the real world.

     The question I have is what does the death experience exactly bring to Worth? I kind of can not get the author's assumption about Worth's death experience and his dream.

Micro Project 2

     The exploration to Waxner Center is unforgettable journey, because I consciously activated all of my five senses. When I pushed the door and went out of my residence, It is so cold outside. Considering that the way to Waxner Center is kind of far away, I unlocked my bike and started riding it. I could feel the wind blowed from my side. I rode so fast so that the feeling of flying made me forget the chill weather. Then, I decided to slow down to observe the view and architectures. When I saw some buildings I like, I stoped the bike and take some photos about them. About 20 minutes later, I felt a little bit hungry so I went to North Commons to eat lunch. Even though I got a lot of food in buffet, my dissatisfaction for flavors made me start to miss spicy Chinese food in my hometown. During the lunch, because I ate alone, I listened to the audio book of Harry Potter at the same time. The innocent and nice magic world made me relaxed and delighted. On the way to my destination, I found some interesting things other than architectures such as the a cubism-styled sculpture and a black wall with handwriting on it. Finally, I arrived Waxner Center to see David Smith's exhibition . The passage of Waxner Center made of scaffolding is fascinating and the fragrant flowers on the oval let me realize the coming of spring.

     In my micro project 2, I use a campus map as the background. Basically, I use the images of whole building to show what I see on the road. However, It is also interesting to use the most typical or fascinating part of the building such as roofs, windows or columns to represent the whole building. I use the polygonal Lasso Tool and Magnetic Lasso Tool to cut out the buildings and use free transform tool to fit them into the map. I change the opacity of images into around 85% to make it available to see the original background that those photos cover. Then I use pen tool and convert point tool to draw the route and add color to it. I use paint bucket tool to fill the map with colors. Basically, gray stands for void ground. Blue and white stand for buildings. However, I don't want it to be so rigid so I randomly break the rule in order to create diversity and make it more like a free-style art work instead of map paper. Finally, I use type tool to show my other 4 feelings except for visual sense. I realize that I gain a lot after I finally accomplish this project.

Blog 5 Visiting Wexner Center

David Smith: Cubes and Anarchy

The tour to the wexner center is amazing. I enjoy the narrow stairs and like the feeling when you ascend step by step the view becomes open suddenly. The work of David smith can basically be considered as cubism. I think he made some rewarding attempts by absorbing and learning from other artists such as Pablo Picasso. It's fascinating to realize that by using simple shapes like circle, rectangle triangle or trapezoid, you can create so many kind of beauty. I like the idea that he use geometric figure to show figure of body or brain. He uses additive and subtractive form a lot to create those amazing images. I can feel that he uses those simple arrangement to create balance and then he alway find something to break the balance. It inspires me a lot and I begin to think how to apply his ideas, images or sculptures to architecture, even though some of those works are too hard to build in real word as a building. Though this experience, I decide to go to wexner center as often as I can.

Response to Hornby “Nipple Jesus”

     The main character is a person who don't push himself too much. He doesn't have huge dream and accepts his job as a security guard. He is not that kind of person who think a lot. However, being a security guard makes him began to think. It's interesting how he keeps describe the feeling about Jesus made of nipple. At first, he looks at the work from a distance and he likes the painting. Then, he can't understand it when he is close enough to see the nipple. He feels much better about the work because of the affection to the artist and her family. Finally, he gets obsessed about the work because he hates those people who don't understand it and he tries his best to defend it. How he responds to people who watch the exhibition is amusing.--"to look at what people thing, if you don't like it then think the opposite." It make sense when he says that whether it is art doesn't matter, and the most important thing is that the art work isn't boring. Art comes from normal life and is made from normal material. It is not hard to build it after you've seen it. The hard part is to think of it.

     I'm confused about why the author make the artist and people who watch the exhibition so superficial. I think it is not real in world because many of us respect art and are tolerant enough and most artists will think profoundly about their works.

The frames with different size or proportion fill the wall and make it asymmetrical but interesting

The building that extends from the middle axis to both sides creates the incredible aesthetic feeling

When I saw the dishes in my host family's home, I found out that Chinese are used to eat on a round table so that they can communicate and share the food conveniently.

There are two kinds of unstability in my picture. One is created by the moving objects and its unproper positions in the picture. One is created by rotation

Did the picture itself capture the viewer’s attention or was it the story behind the picture?

When we shoot a glance at a picture, it must be the picture itself that captures our attentions. We will be attracted by its proportion, color and beauty. However, the story behind the picture can also impress us strongly.

What was the same about the experience? What was different?

I take photos about people studying alone on the stairs each time, because I can feel the power of peace. You can find radial shape and structure too on the initial ten pictures taken on oval. I pay a lot of attentions on finding the beauty of the building.

The difference is that on the first time I pay more attention about plants because of the spring season. However, on the second time, I deliberately use different things as my subject. Most importantly, I use diverse strategies professor told us to take pictures on the second time.

   

Which process was more enjoyable for you and why?

When I go out the second time and use those strategies to take unstable, symmetrical image and the image from the point of view of an ant, I find it a lot of fun to see the world differently by rotating the camera, putting it down to the ground or raising it high.

Which images are your favorites?  Why?

I like the contrast between asymmetry and symmetry. It's incredible that both strategies can create beauty. I also like images from the point of views of an ant or a bird and my unstable photo. They all provide me image that I can hardly notice in every day life. They can all be considered as my new experience.
